# Consentmo Terms & Conditions Checkbox: Setup and Configuration Guide

The Terms & Conditions Checkbox in Consentmo lets you require customers to agree to your store's terms before proceeding with a purchase.

You can display the checkbox on product pages, the cart page, or the cart drawer, link it to your Shopify Terms of Service or a custom policy, customize its appearance, and record customer acceptance.

This feature can help customers acknowledge important purchase conditions, including return policies, shipping terms, and other store agreements.

|| Plan availability: The Terms & Conditions Checkbox is available on the Plus and Enterprise plans.
# How to Access Terms & Conditions

1. Open the Consentmo GDPR app.
2. Go to **Age gate & Terms → Terms & Conditions**.
3. Enable the feature or click **Re-enable Terms & Conditions** if it was previously disabled.
4. Save the auto-enabled app embed **Consentmo Terms** in your theme editor.

# Setup

The Setup section controls which policy customers agree to, how they can review it, where the checkbox appears, and whether acceptance is recorded.

## Content source

**Link the checkbox to**

Choose which policy should be associated with the checkbox:
* **Shopify terms of service**
  Uses your store's existing Terms of Service policy configured in Shopify.
* **Custom URL**
  Allows you to link to a different policy or Terms & Conditions page.

## Display mode

Choose how customers can access the linked terms:
* **Link to policy page**
  Opens the configured policy page when customers select the link.
* **Open policy in popup**
  Displays the policy in a popup so customers can review it without leaving the current purchase page.

## Where it appears

Select where the Terms & Conditions Checkbox should be displayed:
* **Product page**
  Displays the checkbox before the Add to cart button, adding an agreement step to the purchase.
* **Cart page**
  Displays the checkbox above the checkout button. This is the recommended placement.
* **Cart drawer**
  Displays the checkbox inside the cart drawer, depending on your Shopify theme's compatibility.

You can enable multiple locations at the same time.

|| Important: Accelerated checkout methods such as Shop Pay and other wallet-based payments may bypass the cart and its checkbox. Test the available checkout methods on your storefront to confirm where acceptance is enforced.

## Proof of acceptance

Enable **Record every acceptance** to keep a record when a customer agrees to your Terms & Conditions.

When enabled, Consentmo creates an acceptance record that can travel with checkout and be linked to the corresponding Shopify order when supported. These records are also available in the Consentmo Reports section.
# Design

The Design section lets you customize the appearance of the Terms & Conditions Checkbox.

## Checkbox design

You can customize:
* **Checkbox:** Color of the selected checkbox.
* **Text:** Color of the agreement message.
* **Link:** Color of the Terms & Conditions link.
* **Error text:** Color of the validation message.
* **Error background:** Background color of the validation message.

These settings help you match the checkbox to your storefront's design.
## Custom CSS

Add custom CSS for more advanced styling adjustments.

Example:
```
.csm-terms-row {
  padding-bottom: 15px;
}
```

This example adds spacing below the checkbox. Check on your live storefront all CSS changes.
# Content

The Content section controls the text displayed alongside the checkbox and the validation message shown when customers haven't accepted the terms.

## Languages

Enable **Multilingual Terms & Conditions checkbox** to customize the checkbox for the languages configured in your Shopify store.

The available languages are automatically pulled from Shopify.

Select a language to edit its content. The store's default language is marked accordingly.
## Checkbox label

Customize the **Message** displayed next to the checkbox.

*Default:*
`I agree to the {terms}`
The `{terms}` placeholder automatically inserts the Terms & Conditions link using your configured content source.
*For example:*
`I have read and agree to the {terms}`

Keep the `{terms}` placeholder in the message if you want customers to access the linked policy directly from the checkbox.

You can use **Reset to defaults** to restore the original message.
## Alert text

Customize the message displayed when customers try to continue without accepting the terms.

*Default:*
`Please agree to the Terms & Conditions to continue.`
*For example:*
`Please accept our Terms & Conditions before proceeding to checkout.`

The alert text can also be customized for each supported language.
# Preview

Use the live preview to review the checkbox and validation message before saving your changes.

Available preview options:
* **Cart:** Shows how the checkbox appears within the cart, above the checkout button.
* **Alert:** Shows the validation message displayed when acceptance is required.

You can also switch between **desktop and mobile** views.
# Acceptance Records

When **Record every acceptance** is enabled, customer acknowledgements are saved in Consentmo.

To view these records:

1. Open **Analytics & Reports**.
2. Select **Reports**.
3. Open **Consent records**.
4. Find records with the type **Terms & Conditions**.

Each record includes:

* **Type:** Identifies the record as Terms & Conditions.
* **Unique ID:** Unique identifier for the acceptance record.
* **Accepted page:** The storefront page where acceptance occurred, such as `/cart`.
* **Given consent:** Displays N/A for Terms & Conditions records.
* **IP address:** The customer's partially masked IP address.
* **Interaction:** Displays Accepted.
* **Date of consent:** Date and time of acceptance.
* **Location:** Country associated with the interaction.
* **Device type:** Device used, such as Desktop or Mobile.

You can use the available search, date filters, and sorting options to locate specific records. Available date filters include Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, and Last 90 days.
