# Switching CMP: Migrating from Avada Cookie Consent to Consentmo

# How to Switch from Avada Cookie Consent to Consentmo

If you're switching from Avada Cookie Consent to Consentmo, it's important to preserve your existing consent records, review customer data requests, remove any leftover integrations, and make sure only one cookie consent platform is active on your Shopify store.

This guide walks you through exporting your data from Avada, disabling the previous app, and setting up Consentmo.

## Step 1: Export Your Consent Records from Avada

Before uninstalling Avada Cookie Consent, download your existing consent records so you can preserve a history of visitors' consent decisions.

1. Open your **Shopify Admin**.
2. Navigate to **Apps > Avada Cookie Consent**.
3. Open **Consent logs** from the sidebar.
4. Select **Policy acceptances**.
5. Review the available consent records.
6. Click **Export** in the upper-right corner to download the records as a CSV file, if your plan supports exporting.

The report includes information such as:

* Email address, where available
* Page URL where consent was provided
* Consent categories selected
* IP address
* Date and time of consent

|| **Important:** Avada's Policy Acceptances export requires the **Advanced plan or higher**. If the Export button is disabled and you see an upgrade message, you may need to upgrade or contact Avada support to ask about retrieving your existing records.

Save any exported files securely for future reference. Historical consent records from Avada are not automatically imported into Consentmo.

## Step 2: Export Customer Data Requests

If customers previously submitted personal data requests through Avada, review and preserve their history before removing the app.

1. In Avada Cookie Consent, open **Consent logs**.
2. Navigate to **Data requests**.
3. Review the available requests submitted through your store's privacy or compliance page.
4. Check the customer email, request type, source, IP address, and submission date.
5. Export the available records as a CSV file if the export option is provided.

|| **Note:** If you have existing requests but cannot find an export option, contact Avada support before uninstalling the app. Make sure any pending requests are documented so they can still be fulfilled after the migration.

## Step 3: Review Avada Scripts and Integrations

Depending on your previous configuration, Avada may have additional scripts or tracking integrations installed in your Shopify theme.

To check:

1. Go to **Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes**.
2. Click the three-dot menu beside your active theme.
3. Select **Edit code**.
4. Open the `theme.liquid` file.
5. Review any manually added Avada integrations.

### Google Consent Mode integration

Older Avada configurations may use the following theme asset:
* `avada-cookiebar-gcm-integration.js`
If present, check for the corresponding script reference inside `theme.liquid`.

When replacing Avada with Consentmo, remove the old integration file and its script reference. Configure Google Consent Mode v2 straight through Consentmo instead, without any additional scripts.

### Custom script blocking

If you previously configured Avada's automatic or manual script blocking, review any affected tracking scripts before disabling Avada.

Some installations may use:
* `avada-early-script-blocker.liquid`
* `{% render 'avada-early-script-blocker' %}`
* Custom blocked script markup using `data-avada-blocked-src`

If applicable, remove the Avada-specific early blocker and restore the original tracking script references before switching to Consentmo's blocking configuration.

|| **Important:** Tracking scripts manually modified for Avada's blocker may remain inactive after Avada is removed unless their original loading configuration is restored.

If you're using **Google Tag Manager**, review your container for any Avada-specific consent tags, triggers, or integrations that need to be replaced.

**Tip:** Back up your theme before making changes. Do not remove unrelated Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or other tracking installations that are still needed by your store.

## Step 4: Review Existing Privacy Pages

Avada Cookie Consent may have configured privacy request pages or links in your Shopify store.

Go to **Shopify Admin > Online Store > Pages** and review any Avada-related pages, such as:

* GDPR Privacy Requests
* Customer Data Requests
* Cookie information or privacy pages

Check whether these pages are linked in your storefront footer, Privacy Policy, or navigation menus.

Before deleting or replacing a page, make sure the corresponding functionality is available through Consentmo.

| **Tip:** Consentmo's [Smart Privacy Center](https://support.consentmo.com/en/article/smart-privacy-center-privacy-requests-8p4wcp/) allows customers to manage their privacy choices and submit requests from one page.

## Step 5: Install and Prepare Consentmo

You can install Consentmo and configure its settings before disabling the existing Avada banner.

1. Open [Consentmo GDPR Compliance in the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/gdpr-backpack).
2. Click **Install** and authorize the app.
3. Open the Consentmo Dashboard.
4. Configure your cookie banner's content, design, and consent behavior.
5. Set up the applicable regions and privacy requirements.
6. Configure the integrations needed for your store, including Google Consent Mode v2, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, or other tracking services.

Keep the public Consentmo banner disabled until you're ready to deactivate Avada.

For assistance with the initial configuration, see our [Consentmo Getting Started guide](https://support.consentmo.com/en/article/first-steps-with-our-app-getting-started-k3w4no/).

## Step 6: Disable the Avada App Embed

Before activating Consentmo, disable Avada's app embed to prevent two cookie consent platforms from running simultaneously.

1. Open **Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes**.
2. Click **Customize** on your active theme.
3. Select **App embeds** from the left sidebar.
4. Locate **Avada Cookie Bar**.
5. Switch the toggle **OFF**.
6. Click **Save**.

If your store also uses separate Avada app embeds for **Google Consent Mode** or **Script Blocker**, disable those as part of the migration after preparing their replacements.

Make sure any Avada-specific scripts identified in Step 3 have been removed or updated appropriately.
This helps prevent duplicate consent signals, conflicting tracking behavior, or leftover scripts interfering with Consentmo.

## Step 7: Activate the Consentmo Cookie Banner

Once Avada has been disabled and its old consent integrations have been addressed, you can activate Consentmo.

1. Return to your **Consentmo Dashboard**.
2. Locate the cookie banner activation section.
3. Click **Activate banner**.
4. In Shopify's theme editor, confirm that the **Consentmo GDPR Compliance** app embed is enabled.
5. Click **Save**.
6. Set the banner status to **Enabled** in Consentmo.

Consentmo will now manage cookie consent on your storefront according to the regions, banner settings, and integrations you've configured.

You can also use **Admin mode** to test the banner before making it publicly visible. For more information, see [How to activate the Consentmo app embed](https://support.consentmo.com/en/article/how-to-activate-the-cookie-banner-to-load-via-app-embed-block-1butzy2/).

## Step 8: Uninstall Avada Cookie Consent

After activating Consentmo and confirming that the previous Avada banner is no longer running:

1. Go to **Shopify Admin > Settings > Apps and sales channels**.
2. Locate **Avada Cookie Consent**.
3. Select **Uninstall**.
4. Confirm the removal.

Check your theme and tracking integrations one final time to make sure no Avada-specific scripts, consent triggers, or app blocks remain. Remember that uninstalling the app does not automatically restore manually modified tracking scripts.

## Step 9: Verify Your Consentmo Setup

Finally, open your storefront in a private or incognito browser window and test the new configuration.

Check that:

* **Only one cookie banner appears:** The Consentmo banner displays without any duplicate Avada banner.
* **Consent choices work:** Accept, Reject, and Preferences buttons update consent as configured.
* **Tracking respects consent:** Analytics and marketing services follow the appropriate consent settings.
* **Regional behavior is correct:** The banner and consent requirements match your configured visitor locations.
* **Privacy pages work:** Customers can access the correct privacy request pages.
* **Consent records are collected:** New visitor interactions appear in Consentmo under **Analytics & Reports > Reports > Consent records**.

If your store uses checkout integrations, customer account extensions, or custom pixels, verify those separately.
