Alt Text Manager: Generation Settings Guide

The Alt Text Manager in Consentmo allows you to automatically generate alt text for your store images, helping improve accessibility and SEO.

This article explains the available generation settings and how to configure them effectively.

How to Use the Settings

  1. Go to the Web Accessibility tab
  2. Open the Alt Text Manager
  3. Run a scan using Scan my images
  4. Review the results
  5. Configure your preferred Generation settings
  6. Click Generate all missing to apply changes

Important: Scanning and generating are two separate steps.

Scan always checks all supported resource types — products, collections, and blog posts — regardless of the generation settings selected.

Generate then creates alt text only for the image types and options you have selected, using the results from that scan.

  • Here is also a short video guide on this:

Overview

Once the scan is complete, you can see the number of Total images scanned, the Alt text coverage, and the number of Images missing Alt text.

Before generating alt text, you can customize how and where it is applied. These settings give you full control over:

  • Which images are included
  • What content is used for generation
  • When alt text should be created

Available Generation Options

1. Image Types

You can choose where alt text should be generated:

  • Product images

This applies to images in the Shopify product media gallery, including the featured image and additional product photos.

Videos and 3D models are skipped.

Images placed directly inside the product description HTML are not scanned and not updated.

  • Collection images

This applies to the Shopify collection featured image.

One featured image per collection is supported.

Images placed inside the collection description HTML are not included.

  • Blog post images

This applies to the Shopify article featured image / hero image.

One featured image per article is supported.

Images placed directly inside the blog post body are not included.

This allows you to target specific areas of your store or apply changes across all supported content.

2. Product Selection

When generating alt text for product images, you can define the scope:

  • All products

Includes published, draft, and archived products in your store

  • Only published products

Limits generation to active products currently visible to customers

This setting controls generation only. The scan itself still checks supported images across all relevant resource types.

3. Content Sources

You can select what information is used to generate alt text:

  • Product title

Provides the AI with the product title as context when generating alt text for product gallery images

  • Product description

Adds more context for a more detailed alt text. The description is taken from the product description content, converted to plain text, and used as additional generation context

You can use one or both options depending on your preferred level of detail.

Important: Product title and Product description are used only as context for generating alt text for supported product gallery images.

Selecting Product description does not scan, update, or add alt text to images placed inside the product description itself.

4. Generation Conditions

To protect existing content, you can enable:

  • Generate alt text only for images that do not have alt text

When this option is selected:

  • Existing alt text will not be modified
  • Only missing alt text will be generated

What Is Not Covered

The Alt Text Manager does not currently scan or generate alt text for:

  • Images inside product description HTML
  • Images inside collection description HTML
  • Images inside blog post bodies
  • Shopify Pages
  • Theme or storefront assets
  • Blog-level images that are separate from individual article featured images
  • Files in Shopify Files that are not attached as product media, a collection image, or an article image
  • Videos and 3D product media

In short, the supported image types are:

  • Product gallery images
  • Collection featured images
  • Blog post featured images

Editing Individual Images

For more control, you can manually update alt text:

  • Click Edit next to any image
  • Add or** modify the alt text** as needed either Manually or by using the "Generate with AI" option
  • Save your changes

This is useful when you want more precise or custom descriptions.

Best Practices

  • Use product titles for consistency and clarity
  • Include product descriptions when more context is needed
  • Enable missing alt text only to avoid overwriting existing content
  • Keep in mind that images embedded inside HTML content are not currently covered
  • Re-scan your store regularly to keep new images optimized

Benefits

Using the Alt Text Manager with the right settings helps you:

  • Improve accessibility compliance
  • Enhance SEO performance
  • Save time with automated generation
  • Maintain high-quality image descriptions

If you needed, you can re-run scans at any time or adjust your generation settings based on your store’s needs.
