Consentmo cookie banner - A/B Testing

A/B Testing for the Cookie Banner

The A/B Testing feature in Consentmo lets you compare two versions of your cookie banner and automatically apply the version that performs better based on the selected test metric.

This is useful when you want to test different layouts, positions, colors, or other banner presentation options without changing the active banner for all visitors at once.

Plan availability: A/B Testing is available on the Enterprise plan.

How to Access A/B Testing

  1. Open the Consentmo GDPR app.
  2. Go to Cookie banner.
  3. Open the Design > A/B testing tab.
  4. Configure the test settings.
  5. Customize both banner versions.
  6. Click Start A/B test.

A/B Test Settings

Before starting the test, you can configure the following options.

Number of variations

Consentmo currently compares 2 banner versions.

Visitors are split evenly between them:

  • Banner version 1: 50%
  • Banner version 2: 50%

Banner version 1 starts from your current banner configuration, while Banner version 2 can be customized separately for the test.

Winning metric

Choose the metric Consentmo should use to determine which banner performs better.

For example:

  • Higher interaction rate

The selected metric is used when determining the winning variation at the end of the test.

Test period

The default A/B test duration is 14 days / 2 weeks.

You can change the End date before starting the test if you want it to run for a different period.

Once the scheduled end date is reached, the winning variation is applied automatically when enough data is available.

Configure the Banner Variations

Each banner version can be configured separately before the test starts.

Depending on the selected banner type, you can adjust options such as:

  • Banner layout
  • Box
  • Banner
  • Centered popup
  • Smart Consent
  • Position
  • For example, Bottom left or Bottom
  • Logo
  • Upload a logo for the variation
  • Banner colors
  • Light
  • Dark
  • Match theme
  • Custom
  • Additional banner styling and configuration available under Show more

Use the live preview to review each variation before starting the test.

You can also use Preview as to check how the banner appears for a selected region and switch between desktop and mobile views.

Starting the A/B Test

Once both banner versions are ready:

  1. Click Start A/B test.
  2. Review the confirmation screen.
  3. Confirm:
  • Banner variations
  • Winning metric
  • End date
  1. Click Start test.

Visitors will then be split between the two versions for the duration of the test.

What Happens While the Test Is Running

When an A/B test is active, the test configuration is locked to keep the results consistent.

The following Cookie Banner settings cannot be changed during the test:

  • Design
  • Content
  • Regions
  • Behavior

A notice is displayed in the app while the test is running.

If you need to change these settings, you must first stop the active A/B test.

The test can be stopped manually at any time.

Reviewing Test Performance

While the test is active, select View analytics to review how the two variations are performing.

This lets you compare the test results before the scheduled end date.

At the end of the test, Consentmo uses the selected winning metric to determine which variation performed better.

If enough data is available, the winning banner is applied automatically.

Recommended Testing Tips

For more useful results:

  • Change one or a small number of meaningful elements between the two variations.
  • Avoid making the versions too similar.
  • Let the test run long enough to collect meaningful visitor interactions.
  • Avoid making major storefront changes during the test period when possible.
  • Review the analytics before stopping a test early.

Examples of useful tests include:

  • Box vs. Banner
  • Different banner positions
  • Light vs. Dark design
  • Different button arrangements
  • Different visual emphasis while keeping the same consent options
